Duniya will be proudly participating in the SF Carnaval parade again this year, May 27th! Last year we featured a colorful contingent of Bhangra, Bollywood and West African dancers, alongside Afoutayi Haitian Dance Company. We hope to make this year even better and brighter than last year.

Here are the details:

Rehearsals will take place on Saturdays from 10:15-11:30am, beginning March 10th. These rehearsals will focus on Bhangra choreography. The location will be the same as last year, Bollyhood Cafe studio, 3372 19th St., between Mission and Capp. The final 2 rehearsals will likely take place outdoors and the times may change slightly. We will let you know these details as soon as they are fixed. Joti will be offering extra practice in her Thursday classes at ODC as well.

Fees will be $144 for rehearsals. This comes out to $12/class. All participants will be expected to pay this flat fee for classes, regardless of whether they miss a rehearsal. (We don’t charge a registration fee, like most other groups, so this is our way of ensuring we have the funds to cover extra Carnaval costs).

Costumes will be rented to participants this year at a fee of $50. A $50 deposit will also be required, which will be returned to participants when the costumes are returned.

Payment plans are an option. This is a community event and we want to keep it accessible to the community.

If there is enough interest in dancing West African for the parade, we will offer this option as well, with a different rehearsal time. Please contact us if you would like to perform West African dance in the parade.

If you are interested in joining our Carnaval contingent this year, please send an email with your name, email address and phone number to info@duniyadance.com and we will register you!

“Half and Halves: A Dance Exploration of the Punjabi-Mexican Communities of California”

Saturday, November 19, 7pm
Roosevelt High School Auditorium
4250 E. Tulare Avenue
Fresno, CA

An exploration in dance of the little-known cultural legacies of Punjabi-Mexican communities founded in California in the early 20th century inspires the collaboration of Bhangra dancer/choreographer Joti Singh with her company Duniya Dance and Drum Company and Ensambles Ballet Folklorico de San Francisco. Half and Halves takes as its subject matter the establishment and impacts of mixed Punjabi and Mexican families that began in the early 20th century as a result of strict immigration and marriage laws, social pressures and conventions and gives the story wings within the rich dance forms and histories of these cultures that are central to the story of California and the West. The story holds particular relevance for Americans today as immigration laws and cultural identities are at the forefront of government policy and the news, and the piece takes its name from the slang term for the children of Punjabi-Mexican parents.

The performance features over 26 dancers and live music. The work will feature both Mexican Folklorico dance, as well as Bhangra, a high energy harvest and celebration dance from Punjab, India, exploring themes related to farming life, marriage, immigration, and racial and ethnic discrimination. The choreographers also explore dance in this performance that does not neatly fit into one genre or another, drawing inspiration from the complex cultural identities of these communities and the issues and challenges they faced.

First Friday of every month: Duniya Dancehall!

This month we are raising money for our performance of “Half and Halves” in Fresno! We will give you a sneak peek of our new Bhangra dance piece for the performance, as well as a short Bhangra dance lesson. DJ Juan Data and Wontanara Revolution will get you dancing.

We have a huge cast and lots of expenses! We are trying to raise money for travel, lodging, small costume items, etc. Any amount helps! If you can’t come to Duniya Dancehall but still want to help out, please email joti@duniyadance.com.

On November 19th, we will present our full-length multimedia performance “Half and Halves” in Fresno. Many of you may have seen this performance last year at the Brava Theater.
